Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are composite materials formed through appropriate processing techniques, utilizing a ceramic matrix reinforced with fibers, whiskers, platelets, or particles made of ceramics, carbon, or refractory metals. For instance, in the powder metallurgy process for producing specialized ceramics, ceramic matrix powders are thoroughly mixed with reinforcing materials and a binder; the mixture is cold-pressed into the desired shape and subsequently sintered—or directly hot-pressed—to produce the final ceramic matrix composite.
